As we continue on with our series, “Life Rules” by Andy Stanley, this week we will be discussing “Encouragement” and what it means to encourage those around us. For most of us when we think about encouragement the first thing that pops into our mind is praise: “Wow, he’s a great athlete,” “she’s really smart,” or “you’ll do a great job, I know it.” But the biblical truth is that encouragement is not always praise. When asked what the greatest command was, Jesus replied: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,†and then He added: “and your neighbor as yourself†(Luke 10:27). Jesus literally said that loving others goes along with loving God. In fact, the Bible tells us that if we say that we love God, but we have hatred towards others, that the love of the Father is not in us (1 John 4:20).
